I’m having a problem with my school laptop.

I was wondering if you think he could fix it.

dad can fix anything

Is it okay if I come over?

sure. i’m not home now

but i’ll txt to tell him you’re on your way.

Thank you!

I slap the laptop closed, slip on my shoes, and run down to the fourth floor as fast as I can. Mr. Eisler’s already unlocked the door for me and propped it open against the dead bolt. I knock anyway, and he calls out, “Come on in, Ashley!”

Inside, he’s sitting in his office. It’s actually supposed to be the pantry, but the Eislers cleared out a bunch of shelves and installed a desk so he has his own private work space. When he sees me, he stands up and points to the kitchen table. “Have a seat,” he says, and joins me there. “Can I get you something to drink? A snack, maybe?”

“No, thanks.” Jason’s parents always treat me like a special guest, even though they’ve known me for basically my entire life.

“Jason tells me you’re having an issue with your laptop,” he says.

“Yeah.” I slide it across the table and he carefully lifts the cover with both hands. As it boots up, ever so slowly, I give an abbreviated version of what went down. “I loaned it to a friend, and I think he installed a virus. He said he clicked on a link to watch some video, but it gave him a blue screen of death. Now my files are locked up and it says the disk space is almost full. Plus, it’s taking forever to start up.”

“I can see that.” When it finishes booting, he nods. “Okay. Let me take a look around and see what I can find.”

Mr. Eisler clicks around in silence for a few moments before confirming what I’d already suspected. “You’ve got a virus, all right. I’m surprised it got past the security scanner. Shouldn’t be too bad to fix. I’ve gotta reboot it in Safe Mode and run a Disk Cleanup. Would you like me to show you how it’s done?”

“Yeah, that’d be great.” I didn’t think anything good could come out of this terrible situation, but for the next hour, Mr. Eisler teaches me a valuable new skill. He walks me through virus removal and shows me how to kill suspicious processes and recover corrupted files. By the time he’s done, my laptop is running at full speed, and I’m feeling confident that the next time this happens, I can fix the problem myself. Not that I ever plan on letting there be a next time.

“Thank you so much for fixing this.” I stand and hug the laptop to my chest. “And thanks for showing me how to do it.”

“It was my pleasure, Ashley. I heard you’re doing the hackathon next weekend?”

“Yeah, I’m super excited for it.”

“Jason said you convinced him to sign up.” He smiles warmly. “You’re such a good influence on him.”

“I don’t know that it was my influence.
